Apparently they did not share their knowledge with the Aztecs, who believed that the sun needed help when an eclipse occurred. Their standard response was to sacrifice a humpbacked person or a dwarf to the supernatural dog, Xolotl, so he would help the sun. The Tahitians had a more romantic view of eclipses. They believed that the sun and moon were lovers, and when they got together they created an eclipse. Whatever myth you may follow, an eclipse is an attractive addition to any room.
